Chapter 6
Present Your Pages To The Search Engines and Directories
In order for a search engine to rank you for your keyword phrases, they must spider your site and get your pages in their index. The process is pay inclusion, letting the search engines find you, and submission software for lesser known or international engines
- Resubmitting
First, for those pages that are already indexed in the search engines, don’t resubmit to them. The rule of thumb is to let the search engine find your pages on their own. If you do resubmit only do it if you make significant changes to pages.
- Start with the Open Directory Project
“The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors.
Google is one of the highest traffic generating sites and in order to rank well with them you need to be in their Google Directory. Google uses the Open Directory Project as their directory. Go to http://www.google.com and select the Directory Tab. Then drill down to an appropriate category for your Website and in the green box for the Open Directory Project you will see a link called “Submit a Site”. Follow the instructions.
With Google especially, but with all search engines, the best way to have all your keyword rich pages found is by letting the search engines spider them on their own. To insure this happens, make sure you have a means for the search engines to find your pages from links to them on your pages already indexed. One excellent way to do that is to have a site map that links to all of your relevant pages. This should be a text link site map using your keyword phrases as the text link whenever possible.
- Google spider engine.
There is a submission process with Google, but it takes longer for them to index your pages if you use it. It is better to let them find a page from a link on a site that is in their index. Follow the site map suggestion above if your site already has some pages indexed, If you have a new domain, make sure there another domain has a link to your domain so the search engine can find your home page and start following the links to include all your relevant pages.
One final reminder. Be sure that your site map has text links to all your pages. Make the text links your keyword phrase for that page and have some other content surrounding the link that is theme appropriate. http://www.semconsultation.com/sitemap.html is a good example.
After the hard work preparing your pages and your site for search engine findability, you'll want to know how well you succeeded and continue to improve your positioning. Proceed to Chapter 7, Checking Progress and Improving Positioning.
